When she was a child her mother, Jane Morris, and her aunt, Bessie Burden, taught her to make large scale embroideries, based on her father's designs, inpired by medieval models. May was encouraged to work as a designer in her own right and she provided several embroidery designs to her father’s company, Morris & Co. In 1885 she took over the embroidery section of the firm and worked in this capacity until 1896. This day-book covers the period of 1882 to 1896 and contains working notes concerning orders, hours worked and wages paid to assistants.\nMay Morris had a long and varied career which stretched well into the 20th century, promoting embroidery through her teaching and her writings.
