The play was based on actual events that took place in the early 1700s and was a recurrent theme in ukiyo-e.\r\n\r\nThis copyist’s drawing, taken from Kuniyoshi’s initial sketches, would usually have been destroyed in the process of producing the key-block, the initial printing block used in the creation of a full-colour print. \r\n\r\nIf completed, this design would have been one of a series of prints depicting the different acts of this much loved play.
