The subject was Rossetti's invention, and he also wrote a sonnet about her. His poetry was not intended to explain his painting, or his painting to illustrate his poetry: the two arts were different means of expressing the same idea. Both place stress on the subject's physical attributes, her remarkable neck, lips and eyes. She shared these features with Jane Morris, Rossetti's mistress, on whom the figure was modelled.","physicalDescription":"Full face female head and shoulders","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rossetti, Dante Gabriel","id":"A8802"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"chalk","id":"AAT11727"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Coloured chalks","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2021NB4538","2006AN6804","2018KT1540"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"34","box":"L"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1875","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"77.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"54.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"44.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"currently glazed wth anti static perspex 05/08/2022","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The finished picture, <u>Astarte Syriaca</u> (1877) is in Manchester Art Gallery.\r\n\r\nA pastel drawing of Jane Morris dated 1876 (Surtees 261B), a study for <u>Mnemosyne</u> (1881; Delaware Art Museum), appears to be a replica of 490-1883.
