She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBeatrix Potter enjoyed sketching the British landscape in all seasons. She first visited the Lake District aged sixteen when the family stayed at Wray Castle and over the next twenty years the family spent many of their summers there. She cemented her connection to the area by purchasing Hill Top, a house by her favourite lake, Esthwaite Water, in 1905, but it was not until her marriage to Lakeland solicitor William Heelis in 1913 that the Lake District became her permanent home. Potter made this study over Monk Coniston Moor on a misty day in 1909. Many years later, in 1930, she purchased the 5000-acre Monk Coniston Estate in order to preserve it; like the rest of Potter's land the estate eventually went to the National Trust. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A watercolour over pencil view of moorland, with a lake seen in the middle distance and a hill seen through mist in the far distance.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour over pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LM3734"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SK Temp 2","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Coniston","id":"x45790"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"16th November 1909","earliest":"1909-11-16","latest":"1909-11-16"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":"drawn at 7am"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"178","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"253","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Nov 16. 09'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, lower left."},{"content":"'Monk Coniston Moor. 7.00 morn. / H B Potter.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil by the artist, verso."}],"objectHistory":"Drawn by Beatrix Potter at Monk Coniston Moor, 16th November 1909.
