Under the name Samuel Courtaulds & Co Ltd, the company had founded the American Viscose Company in North America in 1909.  Rayon was first produced by the American Viscose Company in 1910, and began to be used in Britain from the mid-1920s.  The term rayon replaced artificial silk as the name for man-made fibres made from a cellulose base.
