This colour ‘etching’ is technically ambitious and assured with a dramatic melding of distinctively African styles and motifs within a western pictorial model and using a sophisticated printing process not generally associated with African printmakers who have traditionally preferred woodcut and lino-cut. The technique of this print, described as ‘deep etching’, was invented by Onobrakpeya himself. It is not in fact etching, but engraving on a surface of epoxy resin. The process results in a pronounced sculptural effect (or as the artist describes it, a low relief) in the finished print.","physicalDescription":"Colour print on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Onobrakpeya","id":"AUTH336392"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Deep etching (relief print)","categories":[{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HU9065"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"190","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lagos","id":"x40167"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1972","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1972-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Jean Alero Thomas through Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"61","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"1/15 Aro Oniomo Deep etching Bruce Onobrakpeya, Lagos, August 1972","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Edition number; title; medium; signature; place of production; date.
