He began his career as a freelance advertising and fashion photographer working out of his studio in Zurich. After a short time, Bischof became frustrated with the “superficiality and sensationalism” of the magazine industry, writing \"I am powerless against the great magazines - I am an artist, and I will always be that\". From 1945-49, Bischof travelled extensively throughout Europe documenting the devastation caused by the Second World War. He gained international recognition for his work and was one of the first photographers to join Magnum Photos with the founding members in 1949. Bischof’s humanistic approach to photography took him to India, Vietnam, Korea, Mexico and the United States where he worked on assignments for magazines such as Time and Picture Post. This photograph was taken in Kaesong, South Korea in 1952. The photograph depicts international press photographers documenting the Korean War. Bischof’s career was cut short by his untimely death in 1954 whilst he was working in Peru.
