Very little is known about him but he was active as a painter in The Hague, 's-Hertogenbosch, Leiden and Zierikzee in the Dutch Republic, now the Netherlands. Signed by the artist and dated 1663, Ragueneau's whereabouts that year is unknown but by 1664, he was working in The Hague. It is possible that this portrait was painted there.","physicalDescription":"Portrait of a gentleman in black wearing a lace collar, his head and shoulders are slightly turned to the left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ragueneau, Abraham","id":"AUTH317819"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil paint","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT178684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Dutch School","id":"x31259"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GX6096","2014HB1136","2006BH7771"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"7","id":"THES263054"},"free":"","case":"CA15","shelf":"EXP","box":"BACK OF CASE"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil painting","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Amsterdam","id":"x28722"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid to late 1640s","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1649-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"NCOL.4-2014","id":"O1289589"},"association":"Frame"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mrs Leonore Lena Graham","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"736","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"29/04/2013","earliest":"2013-04-29","latest":"2013-04-29"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"611","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"23","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"635","unit":"mm","qualifier":"previous frame","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"760","unit":"mm","qualifier":"previous frame","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"40","unit":"mm","qualifier":"previous frame","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for Europe 1600-1800\r\nNB: As of 2014 display frame is object number NCOL.4-2014","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mrs Leonore Lena Graham, 1990\n\n","historicalContext":"This painting shows a gentleman dressed in black as fashion required in Holland during mid 17th century.
