She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBefore her marriage at the age of 47 in 1913, Beatrix Potter accompanied her parents on extended summer holidays and she often took the opportunity to sketch the places she visited. The Lake District was a favourite location for the family and became a source of inspiration for Beatrix Potter’s ‘little books’. This pen and ink drawing is a view across Derwentwater showing St Herbert’s Island, which became ‘Owl Island’ in The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (1903, Frederick Warne & Co.). One of the illustrations (p.15 in the 1987 edition) shows the squirrels paddling over to the island, the backdrop the same view as that shown in this drawing. \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"A pen and ink drawing with a lake in the foreground and an island in the centre left, looking across to mountains.
