She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBefore her marriage in 1913, Beatrix Potter accompanied her family on extended summer holidays and she often took the opportunity to sketch the places she visited. The subject of this undated study has been identified as the River Tweed at Coldstream, with a bridge and the river seen from the riverbank. Potter is known to have visited Lennel, Coldstream in summer 1894, when she spent time drawing the River Tweed, so this lively watercolour sketch may date from this trip. She said in her journal of the river: ‘I think it is a very beautiful stream and grows upon one. There is no impressive volume of water like the Tay, but it winds about in a sweet fashion, setting the meadows now on the north, now on the south and reflecting cliffs and trees in the deeper riches.’\r\n","physicalDescription":"A watercolour over pencil sketch of a stone bridge and a river viewed from the riverbank and trees beyond, with the paper used in upright format.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020ML3880"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES318117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tweed","id":"x43700"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"the sheet has been identified as a sketch of the river Tweed"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1894","earliest":"1889-01-01","latest":"1898-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"dating based on Potter's known visit to Coldstream when she made sketches of the Tweed"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"254","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"176","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.
