The Venice guild of glassmakers tried to protect their monopoly by preventing glassmakers from working abroad. From the mid 16th-century onwards, however, some glassmakers managed settle in foreign countries, lured away by high financial incentives. One of the first of such glasshouses was set up at the court in Innsbruck in Austria.
