From 1873 to 1878 he was curate at St Matthew's, Bethnal Green. However, his unorthodox support for the theatre and ballet led to the withdrawal of his licence by the Bishop of London in 1878, and he never again held permanent office in the Church of England. He became involved in educational reform, and sat on the London school board from 1882 until 1903. His association with Bethnal Green, where he was particularly interested in the schools, endured for over 50 years. \r\n\r\nDaisy Radcliffe Clague lived with her husband, the painter Frank Beresford (1881-1967), in the St John's Wood area of London. \r\n\r\nThis portrait was presented to Bethnal Green Museum in 1925, shortly after Headlam's death. The donor, Miss M. L. Wooldridge, informed the museum at this time that Headlam had suggested the donation to her himself.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oil painting, 'The Rev.
