It was drawn by A. Groneman, ca. 1960, after a crayon drawing made in the early 20th century by an English visitor to the abbey.\r\n\r\nIn the early 20th century, when the original drawing was made, the abbey was the private residence of a local family and the abbey church was being used as a barn. A tick layer of dirt covered most of the floor; only part of one of the side chapels had been excavated and examined. Today, most of the floor still remains covered with dirt and unexplored.\r\n\r\nThis drawing is an important archaeological record of the layout of the floor of the abbey. It provides a context for the tree tin-glazed earthenware tiles (C.9-2010, C.962-1922 and C.963) from the floor of the Abbey of Escaladieu that are held in the Ceramics collection, showing their possible position within the overall layout of the floor.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in pencil, pen and gouache showing the layout of a section of the floor of the church of the Cistercian Abbey of Escaladieu. The floor is divided into three sections and is mostly made up of small, square tiles, in red, yellow, green and black, set squarely and in a diamond formation. There are also several larger, ornamented tiles set in the centre of the sections.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Groneman, A (Mr)","id":"AUTH315415"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"After a crayon drawing made in the early 20th century by an English visitor to the abbey."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, pen and gouache on paper mounted on wood","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Floor coverings","id":"THES48953"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2016JB7095","2017JU1588"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"C","shelf":"103","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"The Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1960","earliest":"1955-01-01","latest":"1964-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"C.9-2010","id":"O1226493"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"C.962-1922","id":"O86886"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"C.963-1922","id":"O86887"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Given by Breda's Museum, the Netherlands, on behalf of Mr A Groneman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"514","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"549","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing by Mr A.
