She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. <i>The Tale of Peter Rabbit</i> (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nBeatrix Potter visited the Victoria and Albert Museum (then known as the South Kensington Museum) while living in London; it was close to her home in Bolton Gardens, South Kensington. This watercolour and pencil drawing of Styhead Tarn in Borrowdale, the Lake District, is a copy that she made of a drawing she saw during one of her visits to the museum; John Constable’s <i>Sty Head Tarn</i> (museum number 177-1888). Potter’s copy was probably made in around 1900, a century later than Constable’s tour of the Lake District in 1806, when he made his sketch of the tarn. Reflecting on her artwork in 1943, Beatrix Potter called a suggestion that her painting style had been founded on Constable ‘silly’, but referred to him as ‘a great artist with a broad style’. \r\n\r\nThe scene shows Styhead Tarn with three great mountain peaks beyond; Great End, Scafell Pike and Lingmell. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A watercolour in narrow landscape format showing a tarn with three mountain peaks beyond, with a figure in the lower left, completed in watercolour over pencil using a muted palette of browns, purples, blues and green.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beatrix Potter","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after a drawing by John Constable "}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour over pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Copies and Facsimiles","id":"THES253072"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"},{"text":"Romanticism","id":"AAT172863"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020ML3899","2020ML3898"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES318117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Victoria & Albert Museum","id":"x32782"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1900","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Copy - from a sketch by Constable, at S.
