He made his first appearance at the Olympic Theatre as George Rattleton in his own comedy The Humpbacked Lover  7th December  1835, and as Tim Topple the Tiger in Leman Rode's Old and Young Stager .\r\n\r\nMathews married the actress manager Lucy Eliza Vestris in 1838, and with her managed and performed at the Olympic, the Theatre Royal  Covent Garden and The Lyceum Theatres until her death in 1856. After working in America where in 1858 he married Mrs. A.H.
