John Henderson Grieve (1770-1845) was principally associated with Covent Garden. His sons Thomas (1799-1882) and William (1800-1844) started at Covent Garden but went on to work for other managements. Thomas was later assisted by his son Thomas Walford (1841-1899). Together they developed the art of scene painting, evolving from the romantic to the realistic.\r\n\r\nA collection of designs by various members of the Grieve family was given to the V&A by Thomas Walford Grieve's son. The collection includes several watercolour drawings of places in Kent and the South of England, apparently made from life. \n","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing of a view from a beach, looking out to sea, with a ship without masts, centre, and a lighthouse to right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Grieve, Thomas","id":"N12403"},"association":{"text":"theatre designers","id":"AAT25681"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2016JH2465"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES356688"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by John Walford Grieve","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Margate'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in ink on reverse, upper left hand corner"},{"content":"'4'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil on reverse, upper left hand corner"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":" ","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This drawing is one of a collection of theatre designs by the Grieve family, given to the museum by John Walford Grieve (1886-1981), the son of Thomas Walford Grieve.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour drawing by the Grieve family, probably by Thomas Grieve, showing a view from the beach at Margate, early 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.1030-1984"],"accessionNumberNum":"1030","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":1984,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2015-06-01","availableToBook":true}}
