Perhaps best known today for her 1792 A Vindication of Women's Rights, her publications included Thoughts on the Education of Daughters, 1787, a manual of conduct; a novel Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman; several children's morality tales, a treatise calling for the abolution of slavery and a history of the French revolution.\n\nThis print was engraved by William Ridley for publication in The Monthly Mirror in 1796, the year Wollstonecraft published Letters from Sweden, detailing her solo journey to Sweden after the end of an unhappy affair with the American businessman Gilbert Imlay, the father of her first child. It is a reproduction of the first of two paintings of Wollstonecraft by her friend the Royal Acadamician John Opie (1761-1807). The second portrait was almost certainly painted to celebrate her marriage to William Godwin in March 1797 when she was already pregnant with her second daughter Mary, future author of the novel Frankenstein. Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin died in childbirth in September 1797.","physicalDescription":"Print showing Mrs. Wollstonecraft (1759-1797).
