His career to date has encompassed painting, printmaking, sculpture, film, photography, drawing and performance. He seeks to challenge the givens of 'art' by creating works that question conventional thinking, materials and methods of display. His bold and confident approach to printmaking proved influential to his contemporaries and also to a generation of younger artists.\n\r\nSpaghetti all vongole twice (screenprint, 1995) relates to the installation of drawings sandblasted onto glass panels, commissioned by Credit Suisse for the staff restaurant at the company’s headquarters at Canary Wharf in 1994. Like the images on the panels, the print suggests half-glimpsed linear faces and strands of spaghetti on plain coloured backgrounds. Lying in front of these is a roughly outlined ovoid face, a motif which recurs in his work. An element of pastiche is characteristic of McLean’s work; the composition here references Cubist collage, Matisse, and Brancusi, with Pop art colour and exuberance.
