She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913.  <i>The Tale of Peter Rabbit</i> (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.  \r\n\r\nThis undated illustration was inspired by Beatrix Potter’s pet rat, Sammy. Potter inscribed the verso of the sheet, ‘studies of a tame rat ‘Sammy’ from life’. Sammy was also the inspiration for Potter’s book <i>The Tale of Samuel Whiskers</i>, or, <i>The Roly-Poly Pudding</i>, published by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1908, the frontispiece to which reads, ‘In remembrance of “Sammy”, the intelligent pink-eyed representative of a persecuted (but irrepressible) race an affectionate little friend, and most accomplished thief.’\r\n","physicalDescription":"A white rat is curled up asleep on a bed of bright patterned fabric in the centre of the composition.
