She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale. \r\n\r\nIn spring 1927 Beatrix Potter joined a National Trust campaign to save Cockshott Point on Lake Windermere from development. Her scheme allowed readers of the American Magazine the Horn Book to contribute to ‘The Windermere Fund’, offering fifty original signed drawings from The Tale of Peter Rabbit for sale at a guinea a piece. This drawing of August 1927 reproduces the illustration of Peter by the door in the wall from the well-loved book, when: ‘He found a door in a wall; but it was locked, and there was no room for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.’\r\n\r\nPotter’s letter of appeal was published in the August 1927 issue of the Horn Book and was successful. In a letter to her American friend, Marian Frazer Harris Perry, she said: ‘I’m sure I am doing good in trying to save anything I can of our Lake country from being vulgarized; for, as true education advances, the beauty of unspoilt nature will be appreciated; and it would be a pity if the appreciation came too late’. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Watercolour and sepia ink replica of the illustration of Peter Rabbit by the door in the wall from The Tale of Beatrix Potter, showing Peter crying in front of a pale blue-grey door, a mouse looking on, a brick wall to the left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Potter, Beatrix","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"watercolour and sepia ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Anthropomorphism","id":"THES252998"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2025PK5145"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"012","id":"THES318126"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Near Sawrey","id":"x40059"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"08/1927","earliest":"1927-08-01","latest":"1927-08-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Beatrix Potter / Aug. 1927'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"inscribed lower right by the artist"}],"objectHistory":"Made for the <i>Horn Book</i> magazine fund-raiser in 1927.
