The two confronted makara heads of each bangle are fixed on a pin on one side which slides into a hole in the main part of the bangle with a flange on the other side with a central hole through which a screw set with a diamond in its head fastens the two pieces of the bangle together. The screw unscrews anti-clockwise, which is in the western rather than in the Indian manner of pre-twentieth-century jewellery. The makara heads and outer face of each bangle is set with rubies and diamonds in kundan gold on an enamelled ground of green picked out in red and white and touches of bright blue. The gem-set bands are separated by white enamelling decorated with pairs of peacocks within a floral design. The inner faces are enamelled with a floral design in red and green against a white ground with a border on either side enamelled in powder blue with gold hatching. One bangle shows a certain amount of wear on some areas of the enamelling, and is missing a small diamond at the end of one of the floral cartouches.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, enamel, rubies, diamonds","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2019MC2939","2019MC3196","2019MC3183","2019MC2991","2019MC2986","2019MC2967","2019MC2989","2019MC3157","2019MC2969"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"043","id":"THES375387"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"043","id":"THES375387"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bangle","id":"AAT45992"}],[{"text":"Bangle","id":"AAT45992"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rajasthan","id":"x29841"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"20th century","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W. She bought the bracelets for 8068 Euros from the Indian jewellery historian, Usha Ramamritham Bala Krishnan, in April 1999, having first seen the pair in the preceding October. The bangles reportedly had been owned by a lady who had married into a high class Rajput family from Jaipur in 1947 when she was seventeen years old. The husband's grandfather had apparently been a Chief Minister to the Jaipur royal family and it was his wife who had reportedly given the bangles to her grand-daughter-in-law as she was the only female member of the family. The bangles had been worn up until the 1990s when the owner left Delhi and joined an ashram in Pondicherry. Dr Ganguly was not aware of whether the bangles came onto the market via their last owner or through her family by marriage.\r\n\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of bangles from Rajasthan in gold, enamel, diamonds and rubies.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Indian folk jewellery : designs and techniques / Waltraud Ganguly.
