The photographs were taken between 1867 and 1870 under the direction of John Henry Parker, the founder of the British and American Archaeological Society of Rome. He employed several local photographers including De Bonis, Filippo Spina, Carlo Baldassare Simelli, Francesco Sidoli, Filippo Lais, Giovanni Battista Colamedici, as well as a Canadian one, Charles Smeaton. The Victoria and Albert Museum houses a selection of the most significant photographs from this collection.\n\nThe given title of the photograph being of the \"Porticus Liviae (?), or Porticus Absidata (?), round the edge, and of the Aedes Larum\" may be incorrect and rather shows the ruins of the Temple of Venus and Roma constructed by the Emperor Hadrian, the church of S. Francesca Roman, the Olivetan Benedictines: Monastery of S. Maria Nova. The marble arch on the left is the Arch of Titus. The Arch is standing on the Sacra Via or Sacred Way.
