The designs are by Francis Skidmore, (1817-1896) who was a leading Victorian metalworker. Now little known, Skidmore was once famous as the maker of the Albert Memorial (1863-1876) and the Hereford Screen (which was exhibited in London at the International Exhibition of 1862). Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) designed both the memorial and the screen and employed Skidmore to execute them. Skidmore also produced church plate, light fittings, and furniture but was best known for his innovative architectural ironwork. Based in Coventry, Skidmore worked for some of the leading designers of the Gothic Revival movement, particularly Sir George Gilbert Scott. Skidmore's career peaked in the 1860s when his factory employed over 100 staff but due to ill health and he died in relative poverty.\r\n\r\nThese designs are highly finished presentation drawings to be shown to the client. They show mosaic in metalwork mounts of the type on both the Albert Memorial and the Hereford Screen.","physicalDescription":"Two designs, one above the other, with the top one showing a bird's eye view of semi-precious stones in a metalwork mount and the lower one depicting the mount in profile both are situated on a ground painted in turquoise watercolour.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Skidmore, Francis Alexander (the younger)","id":"A8856"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"drawing with a compass","id":"x40299"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour on paper with holes made by a compass","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009BX6392"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"M","shelf":"80","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Coventry","id":"x32527"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1867","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the Friends of the National Libraries","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design by Francis Skidmore (1817-1896).","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jones, Huw and Wickham, Annette. <u>Francis Skidmore.
