Enabling the anonymous release of digitally-held and sensitive information, it has fostered debates about transparency, democratic oversight and the role of the government. In 2011, graphic designers Metahaven collaborated with WikiLeaks to create merchandise to fund the organisation’s work, during a time of financial blockade. This silk scarf is a visual play on transparency, simultaneously revealing and concealing the body. It used the language of camoflague, and how scarves can be used in many different ways, to mirror how WikiLeaks often operates in order to disseminate important information. Metahaven are a research and design studio founded by Vina Kruk and Daniel van der Velden, who often use design to explore political and social issues, using distinctive aesthetics taken from digital culture.
