According to the mythology Bali granted Bamana, the dwarf, three feet of land. Bamana soon covered the heaven with one of his feet and the earth with his second. Bamana then asked Bali as to where should he place his third foot. Bali being a Vishnu devotee requested Bamana to place the third foot on his own head. Bali has been depicted as draped in the period garments and head gear of a well-to-do gentleman of Calcutta and has Vaishnavaite markings on his forehead. One of Bamana's legs is pointing upwards indicating heaven and one leg is placed on the earth. Bamana is shown here with white wide eyes. In his four hands Bamana is supposed to be holding the attributes of Vishnu. Bamana is wearing a short dhoti and has a cape over his shoulder. The stock-in-trade ornaments adorning Vishnu were painted in white paint.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"tin alloy","id":"AAT10978"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in watercolour on paper, with tin alloy details","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Hinduism","id":"THES48941"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kalighat","id":"AAT18988"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GK3696","2017KK1696"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES403789"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kolkata","id":"x32018"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"449","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"31/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-31","latest":"2013-07-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"274","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"31/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-31","latest":"2013-07-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"31/07/13 dimensions measured as part of Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project 2013; object irregular in shape","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The painting was originally acquired from G.
