In this type of needlework, strands of the woven linen are cut and pulled away. The remaining warp or weft threads are then embroidered together to create an openwork effect, in this case a grid of squares and circles. Spangles arranged in a diaper pattern further enhance the geometric pattern of the needlework. The waistcoat's simple style with a high waist and elbow-length, full sleeves is characteristic of the 1630s.","physicalDescription":"The waistcoat is made of linen and is unlined. It has a high round neck and opens at the front. The sleeves are elbow length and very full, set deep into the back, with tie fastenings at the wrist. Gores added at the hem add fullness below the waist. The neck, front and hem are edged with bobbin lace. The waistcoat is decorated all over with drawn-thread-and-pulled-fabric work, and embroidered with silver spangles","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"linen thread","id":"x35336"},{"text":"spangles","id":"x38420"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"hand embroidery","id":"x30339"},{"text":"bobbin lace making","id":"x30355"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, linen thread, silver spangles; hand-sewn, hand-embroidered, bobbin lace","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AF9727","2006BF0534","2012FR9477","2012FT8265","2012FT8266"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR002","id":"THES385144"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Waistcoat","id":"AAT216053"}],[{"text":"Jacket","id":"AAT46167"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1630-1639","earliest":"1630-01-01","latest":"1639-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"53.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Shoulder to centre front","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"70.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Bust under armholes","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The waistcoat was cleaned by Messrs.
