Performers included members of Boomtown Rats, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Wham!, Duran Duran and Bananarama. <i>Do They Know It's Christmas? </i>was written by Geldof and Ure, and the recording of was made in a single day, 25 November 1984. The record was released in the UK on 3 December 1984 and went straight to Number One in the charts, where it stayed for five weeks. It enjoyed worldwide success; although the original hope was to raise £70,000 this figure was far exceeded and within 12 months it had raised £8 million.\n\r\nThis award was made by Ampex, the American company founded in 1944. The company produced high-performance recording and storage products, including multi-track systems and tape for the record industry. Top-selling records made using their mastering tape were awarded the Golden Reel.
