He began to work in London in the later 1920s, creating sets for Noel Coward’s <i>Bitter Sweet</i> in 1929 and for Rodgers and Hart’s <i>Ever Green</i> in 1930. He was in Paris in the autumn of 1933 when an acquaintance advised him not to return to Nazi Germany. Stern went to Holland and arranged for his wife and daughter to join him. He then returned to Paris and, while waiting to take up a contract with the Fox Film Company in Hollywood, he painted a series of 60 watercolours of the city, many of which were exhibited by a Parisian art dealer under the title <i>Paris ou par Stern</i>.
