Breaking the formal sequence of undergarment layers of hanbok, the pleated outer-layer underskirt mujigi is used here as the innermost underskirt to create a contemporary tapered Korean dress, hanbok, has\r\ncontinuously evolved. Its earliest form\r\ndates to the Goguryeo kingdom (37 BC\r\n– AD 668). The modern hanbok for\r\nwomen derives from the early 20th\r\ncentury and is characterised by a jacket,\r\njeogori, with curved sleeves worn over\r\nan A-line floor-length skirt, chima.\r\nWith the rapid modernisation of South\r\nKorea after the Korean War (1950–53),\r\nwestern clothing gained popularity and\r\nhanbok became reserved for formal\r\noccasions like weddings. In recent years,\r\nhowever, wearing hanbok has become\r\na fashion statement among a younger\r\ngeneration of trendsetters.\r\nIn South Korea today, designers have\r\nreinterpreted hanbok as both formal\r\nand daily wear by incorporating\r\nsophisticated silhouettes and\r\ncontemporary fabrics.
