He exhibited furniture at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society over a long period. He appears to have specialised in cabinets on stands, all with curving strap-work on the doors, similar to the pattern on the front of this cabinet. Designed by Spooner and made under his personal supervision, it was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1925. After his death his widow offered to bequeath it to the V&A. Ralph Edwards, Keeper of the Furniture and Woodwork Department at the Museum, had been Spooner's friend and in 1939 recommended acceptance of the proposed bequest, describing Spooner as 'a learned ecclesiologist and man of fine taste, and closely identified with the Early Crafts Movement'. It came to the V&A on Mrs Spooner's death in 1950.","physicalDescription":"Cabinet with flat top, upper section containing two doors decorated with a strapwork pattern, a keyhole in the right (or proper left) door; lower section with three small drawers above two larger drawers, all with round wooden handles; on moulded plinth, shaped to form semi-circular motif in centre and at top of each of the four square section legs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Spooner, Charles Sydney","id":"A21119"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Spooner, Charles Sydney","id":"A21119"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"making, supervised by"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"},{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Walnut with mahogany carcase","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AX5780"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Cabinet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1925","earliest":"1925-01-01","latest":"1925-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mrs M.D. Spooner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"4' 8\"","unit":"ft","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2' 6.75\"","unit":"ft","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from register","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Walnut cabinet with doors above and five drawers below, made by Charles Spooner, 1925","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Cooper, Jeremy, <i>Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors </i>.
