As a rule, he would begin the drawings for his pupils, often reusing his own earlier compositions, to which his royal pupils could then add details. The drawings were bound at an early date into an album, now dismantled. The 19th-century binding of the album bore the bookplate of Roberto I of Parma, who married Princess Maria Pia of Bourbon. She was the younger daughter of Ferdinando II of the Two Sicilies and the sister of the pupils who had with the assistance of their teacher Gigante, produced the works in the album.\r\n\r\nThis watercolour is monogrammed by the Princess Maria Annunziata di Borbone, the fourth daughter of King Ferdinand II and his secod wife maria Theresa of Austria. In 1862 she married Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria. The assassination of their first son, Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 precipitated the outbreak of WWI.
