In the background is a crowd brandishing Union Jack flags around a column on the steps of the town hall. The right hand side of the postcard depicts graves of English aristocracy in South Africa, killed in action in the Second Boer War. The tombstones read from left to right, Marquis of Winchester, Earl of Ava, Earl of Airlie, followed by two more in the distance with indecipherable names. The caption reads 'While Mr Lloyd George (disguised as a policeman) was running away from his countrymen - the lords were laying down their lives for their country'. Also lettered 'by permission of Daily Express'. The postcard in unused and on the reverse is printed the names and addresses of the printer and publisher.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"David Allen","id":"A9085"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"x31107"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"The National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations","id":"A13606"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed postcard","categories":[{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Postcards","id":"THES259949"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2B","shelf":"SH70","box":"GG68G"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Poster","id":"AAT201080"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1901","earliest":"1901-01-01","latest":"1901-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Michael Diamond in memory of his wife","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions measured 25/11/2014","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Political postcard published by The Conservative Party depicting David Lloyd George escaping a meeting at Birmingham Town Hall dressed as a policeman.
