He is scantily dressed in a rich cloak and a straw hat with gilt rim. He plays a large recorder flute and a satchel with his food is suspended from the three against which he is leaning. The tree provides the 'rustic', landscape setting appropriate for a shepherd, but it also has an important structural function as it provides essential support for the fragile porcelain figure.\n \nThe figure was made at the Meissen porcelain factory near Dresden. It was modelled early in 1747, probably as part of a large table centrepiece. White figures for the dessert table were an innovation at the Meissen porcelain factory of the 1740s, replacing earlier figures made of sugar or wax. They were produced for a relatively short period, as polychrome figures became more popular and large table centrepieces went out of fashion during the late 1750s. White porcelain figures are now extremely rare and it is believed that some were returned to the factory later during the 18th-century to be decorated in colours. It is unclear if our statue was originally made as a white figure which was later decorated or if it was produced later in the century as a polychrome figure.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain figure, painted in colours and gilt, of a classical shepherd, partially clad in a loosely draped cloak, wearing a straw hat with gilt rim and leaning against a tree trunk and playing the recorder. A bag, suspended from the tree trunk and with a bread loaf sticking out. Green-enamelled leaves attached to the trunk and leaf and flower-work applied to the base. The tree has an air hole towards the base in the back, partially covered by a sprigged leaf and a larger hole towards the middle of the back, disguised as a branch stump. Crossed swords, painted in blue on the back-side of the base. The shepherd's cloak, green inside and purple with a foliage pattern in darker purple on the outside and with a gilt edge, is fastened to his body with a yellow strap. On the bottom of the base an impressed '7' and two paper labels.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"Painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, glazed, painted in colours and gilt","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2015HM1258","2015HM1262","2015HM1259","2015HM1260","2015HM1261"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"P","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":"x38453"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Meissen","id":"x35076"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1747","earliest":"1745-01-01","latest":"1747-12-31"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},"note":"The painting might have been added later during the eighteenth century."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase supported by the American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of the Ten Ten Foundation Inc.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"23/02/2015","earliest":"2015-02-23","latest":"2015-02-23"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"at widest point"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"base","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"12.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"two crossed swords painted in blue on the back of the tree towards the base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"mark for the Meissen porcelain factory"},{"content":"impressed '7' underneath the base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"the meaning of this 7 is unknown"},{"content":"EPE in monogramme on paper collector's label","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"For the Erika Pauls-Eisenbeiss Collection in Riehen, Switzerland\r\n"},{"content":"'Hasse Collection Bonhams 84' on printed paper label","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"This was Bonham's label for the Hasse Sale on 8th October 2014, where the figure was lot 84."}],"objectHistory":"This figure was in the Erika Pauls-Eisenbeiss Collection in Riehen, Switzerland.
