He was executed in 1915 in Salt Lake City following a controversial murder trial. He is generally believed to have been innocent of the crime and punished as a scapegoat for being an itinerant worker and union agitator. His story is told in brief at the top of the poster, alongside the address of the IWW. He holds a paper reading 'If we workers take a notion, we can stop all speeding trains, every ship upon the ocean, we can tie with mighty chains, every wheel in the creation, every mine and every mill, fleets and armies of all nations well at our command stand still'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cortez, Carlos","id":"AUTH333840"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"International Workers of the World","id":"AUTH333866"},"association":{"text":"issued by","id":"x36339"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"linocut","id":"AAT60720"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linocut print","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HL7552"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MM","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Poster","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1979","earliest":"1979-01-01","latest":"1979-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sonia Martin","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"59","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions measured 31/12/2014","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster, 'Joe Hill' by Carlos Cortez for Industrial Workers of the World.
