Instead a different figure of Faith, crowned, holding aloft a cross and a chalice, was electroformed and erected on the flèche of the Albert Memorial, Hyde Park, London, which George Gilbert Scott designed, and which was completed in 1874, to commemorate Prince Albert. This design is for Francis Skidmore (1817-1896) for electroforming the figure which he was to undertake at his firm, Skidmore's Art Manufactures and Constructive Ironwork Company, in Coventry. The figure was then to be attached to the flèche of the Albert Memorial and gilded in situ. \r\n\r\nThis is a working design and the back of the tracing paper of the design has been rubbed with graphite to transfer the design of the figure from this surface to another. The design has been squared up for transfer to a larger surface. The figure is coloured in with a pink wash and set against a brown wash background. In addition, the design could have served as a presentation drawing for George Gilbert Scott and the Committee charged with the construction of the Albert Memorial.","physicalDescription":"Pink figure in long robe holding up a shield with four arrows stuck in it against a brown background on a portrait, rectangular sheet of paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Skidmore, Francis Alexander (the younger)","id":"A8856"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Redfern, James","id":"A18305"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"tracing paper","id":"AAT14161"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"squaring up","id":"x40225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and wash on tracing paper","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2007BM8454"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"M","shelf":"55","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Coventry","id":"x32527"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1867","earliest":"1867-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the Friends of the National Libraries","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"53.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"By descent from Francis Skidmore.\n\nHistorical significance: This is a working design for the figure of Faith for the fleche of the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, London.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for the figure of the Shield of Faith for the Virtues on the fleche of the Albert Memorial by James Redfern, 1867.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Cunningham, Colin.
