The sets, properties and costumes were designed by Leslie Hurry and Robert Helpmann (for whom Hurry had designed his first production, the ballet Hamlet) took the title role. \r\n\r\nThe scenery was made in the Old Vic workshop under the direction of W. H. Parker and painted by Leslie Woolnough. The ladies costumes were made by Violet Rood and the men's costumes were made in the Old Vic Workshops. The properties were also made in the Old Vic workshop under the direction of Helen Thomas. \n\nPhotographs by of the production taken by Angus McBean and now held in the core collection of the Theatre & Performance Collections show the set as realised, with the spider's web cloth dominating the stage. \r\n\r\nCritics were divided in their opinions of the set, The Daily Telegraph on 30 May 1957 declared that ‘Visually, Mr. Searle made a fine sombre spectacle of this production, though Leslie Hurry’s set, which had a thing like a railway culvert on one side and one like an Anderson shelter on the other was not in itself entrancing.’ The Sketch, 9 June 1957, however, described how ‘Douglas Seale has marshalled the great melodrama as well as anyone could wish, on a long, many levelled ramp backed by a spider’s web’.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Design for a litter for Richard III, Act 5, Scene III, created by Leslie Hurry for the production of Richard III, staged by The Old Vic Company in 1957.\nThe design shows an image of an ornate litter, with a yellow frame and covered with blue and red cloth decorated with a pattern of gold fleur-de-lys and a lion rampant.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hurry, Leslie","id":"A9404"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25681"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Old Vic Theatre Company","id":"AUTH323791"},"association":{"text":"producer","id":"AAT197742"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"graphite","id":"AAT11098"},{"text":"blue ink","id":"x45989"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Black ink, watercolour and pencil drawing","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014HF3349"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES356600"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT54190"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1957","earliest":"1957-01-01","latest":"1957-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Caro Rathbone","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Litter for Richard III Act 5 Sc III'/Richards with covering of Fleur de Lys [illegible]/Arms of England on crown'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten annotation in black ink, beneath the design."},{"content":"'Richmond', CHAIR\r\nwith his heraldic [illegible]\r\nQuarterley France, [illegible] & England\r\nwithin colours [illlegible] alternating with gold Fleur de lys, amethyst' ","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten annotation in pencil and ink, at the base of the design."},{"content":"'Leslie Hurry'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten signature at the base of the design."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design by Leslie Hurry for a litter in Act V, scene iii of William Shakespeare's Richard III, Old Vic Company, 1957","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Richard III"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.1813-2014"],"accessionNumberNum":"1813","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2014,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2014-08-07","availableToBook":true}}
