It was made in Lucknow, probably not long before being despatched to the exhibition. It is made of a metal alloy known as bidri, consisting of a blackened zinc alloy usually decorated with silver. The technique takes its name from the city of Bidar, in the Deccan, where it is thought to have originated, but by the mid-19th century other centres, notably Lucknow, were also producing bidri wares.","physicalDescription":"The bottle has a compressed spherical body with flaring straight-sided neck and domed stopper with lotus-bud finial. The body is inlaid in silver with a design of stylised flowers with cusped petals within interlocking cartouches made up of half-palmettes. Horizontal framing borders are filled with foliate and floral scrolls.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bidri","id":"AAT54014"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bidri (copper-zinc alloy) inlaid with silver","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2020MR0654","2006AV6166","2018KN5617"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES394832"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES394832"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bottle","id":""}],[{"text":"Stopper","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lucknow","id":"x32012"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1885","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1889-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from the Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London in 1886","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London in 1886.
