One of his principal patrons was Louis XVI's queen, Marie-Antoinette, and he supplied her with several sets similar to this one in the 1780s, for various French royal palaces. The history of the present set is not known, but the carved decoration - including Cupid's bows with quivers of arrows, and wreaths of flowers -- suggests that it was made for a lady's bedroom or boudoir. \r\n\r\nThe upholstery dates from the 1960s (although the webbing under the seat may be original), but its square profile is based on the style of upholstery fashionable in late 18th-century Paris.","physicalDescription":"Chair of carved and gilt walnut, one of a set of four chairs and two armchairs, carved decoration including cupid's bows with quivers of arrows, and wreaths of flowers.\r\nOn this chair, in the trophy on the top rail, the single arrow points to the left, and the left side of the wreath lies behind the trophy (as on 1062-1882 and in reverse to 1062B-1882).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jacob, Georges","id":"A17276"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Walnut","id":"AAT12476"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"upholstery","id":"x37978"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved and gilt walnut, with original(?) hemp(?) close webbing, and modern silk top covers","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classicism","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2015HW6411","2015HW6410","2015HW6412","2015HW6409","2006AY9586","2006AY9583","2006AY9585","2006AY9584","2006AY9582","2006AY9581","2014HG0404","2014HG0405","2014HG0406","2014HG0408","2014HG0409","2014HG0417","2014HG0418","2014HG0420","2014HG0421"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"1","id":"THES263059"},"free":"","case":"CA13","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES344467"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}],[{"text":"Upholstery","id":"x37978"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1785","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1789-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"1062-1882","id":"O129647"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"1062B-1882","id":"O129649"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"1062C-1882","id":"O129650"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"1063-1882","id":"O130448"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"1063A/1-1882","id":"O129651"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"1063A/2-1882","id":"O129651"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"86","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at widest point of seat","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at back of seat, approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"51.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of seat, approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"43.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of upholstered seat","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of seat rails","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 5 June 2009.
