White figures for the dessert table were an innovation at the Meissen porcelain factory of the 1740s, replacing earlier figures made of sugar or wax. They were produced for a relatively short period, as polychrome figures became more popular and large table centrepieces went out of fashion during the late 1750s. White porcelain figures are now extremely rare. \r\nThe figure was modelled by Meissen's chief modeller, J.J. Kändler early in 1747, probably as part of a large table centrepiece but is was also produced as an individual statuette. A few versions are known, decorated with painted enamels in bright colours. Only one other white version of the Minerva has survived. These other versions show that the figure originally had a large plume on top of the helmet. The plume has been broken off our version and the helmet has been restored to conceal the damage.\r\n\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Figure in white, glazed porcelain of the goddess Minerva wearing a helmet and breastplate, with her left hand resting on her shield, depicting the head of Medusa, and her right hand in position to hold a seperate spear.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kändler, Johann Joachim","id":"A6734"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x28693"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Meissen porcelain factory","id":"A9173"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"glazed porcelain","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2015HM1266","2015HM1263","2015HM1265","2015HM1267","2015HM1264"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES395839"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":"x38453"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Meissen","id":"x35076"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1747","earliest":"1747-01-01","latest":"1747-12-31"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},"note":"There is no mention in the work reports in the archive of the Meissen porcelain factory of who modelled this figure. However, Kaendler writes in his work report of April 1747 that he cut up the model of the goddess Minerva and prepared the parts for moulding and it is extremely unlikely, that Kaendler, as Chief Modeller, would do this for a piece he did not model himself. More often, Kaendler would model a figure and leave the subsequent stages of production to one of his assistrants. The cutting up of a figure had to happen whan the clay was not yet completely dry and therefore it is almost certain that the figure was modelled in March or possibly April 1747."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the Capt.
