This piece relates to his 1997 ‘Lapis’ series of jewels and installation inspired by the quest for the philosopher’s stone. In his website he cites an instruction in an alchemical text: 'Grind the stone to a very fine powder and put it into the sharpest celestial vinegar, and it will at once be dissolved into the philosophical water'. For the series he ground a variety of minerals and combined the grit with a liquid acrylic which he poured into molds.\r\n\r\nThis piece, incorporating ground agate, was part of a limited edition of similar jewels all accompanied by a cloth-bound book detailing the Lapis series and presented within a black case.\r\n\r\nIt is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.","physicalDescription":"Irregular cast resin ball with conical shaped top, translucent and of golden colour, into which at the base are set flakes and chips of grey agate. From the top two partially-oxidised silver rods project into which a spiralling coil of steel wire is fixed. A yellow plastic label inscribed 'AGAATH' is attached to the coiled wire. The case is of dark grey cardboard with metal re-inforced corners, a cloth label (identical to the book cover within)is glued to the lid, and 'AGAATH' is hand-written on the side. The book within the case is cloth-bound, gold with the word 'LAPIS' picked out in black. Published in 1997 and with an introduction by Gert Staal, it documents the 'Lapis' collection.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ruudt Peters","id":"A35599"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"resin","id":"AAT12882"},{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"},{"text":"stainless steel","id":"AAT10920"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast resin with flakes of agate, coiled steel wire and silver","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HT2423","2015HT2422","2015HT2711","2015HT2718","2015HN7064","2015HN7068"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410171"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410171"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410171"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"object","id":""}],[{"text":"case","id":"THES251008"}],[{"text":"book","id":"AAT28051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1997","earliest":"1997-01-01","latest":"1997-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Louise Klapisch Collection, given by Suzanne Selvi","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"95","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"30","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"AGAATH","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"on yellow plastic label"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pendant of resin, agate, stainless steel and silver, designed and made by Ruudt Peters, with grey cardboard case and cloth-bound book.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.42:1-2014","M.42:2-2014","M.42:3-2014"],"accessionNumberNum":"42","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2014,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-25","recordCreationDate":"2014-06-11","availableToBook":true}}
