Its jagged outline extends into the design of the ring, featuring as notches at two corners of the setting and continuing as deep ridges down the gold shoulders.\r\n\r\nBernd Munsteiner, who carved the chevron design into this tourmaline, has been a leading figure in the carving of gemstones for at least three decades. He trained with his father Viktor Munsteiner in the late 1950s, and his artistic approach continues through his son and daughter-in-law who with him now make up the Atelier Munsteiner. \r\n\r\nThis ring is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular tourmaline of asymmetrical profile with sloped facets on two adjacent sides, set with an open back in a gold ring. The back of the stone is carved with a stepped triangular form, two points of which touch the corners of the stone resulting in two angular notches which continue as deep ridges in the shoulders of the gold mount.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bernd Munsteiner","id":"AUTH333934"},"association":{"text":"designed by","id":"x40048"},"note":"tourmaline carved by Bernd Munsteiner"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"tourmaline","id":"AAT11163"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tourmaline (certified 9.25 carats) and gold","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HT7457","2015HT7458"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES410171"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"ring","id":"x43339"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1997","earliest":"1997-01-01","latest":"1997-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Louise Klapisch Collection, given by Suzanne Selvi","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"24","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Marks: '750' for 18 carat gold, and the circular Munsteiner mark on the inside of the band; on the outside of the band a French eagle's head indicating that at some point it was tested / sold in France, and an unidentified German maker's mark (?JH in an oval punch).
