Caroline Broadhead (who like Brugger has worked both as a jeweller and a textile artist) explains how the silver explores ‘a subtle balance between wholeness and disintegration. Each [brooch] holds a tension between beauty and destruction, finding the limit of how much material can be subtracted and how much must be saved to maintain the brooch’s precarious status. Using the simple act of drilling, but taken to its extreme, Monika, finely, obsessively and enchantingly, sabotages a robust material to the point of near collapse … a metal into a textile. Having begun with something complete, Monika has taken most of it away, but is somehow left with more than she started with.’ (Caroline Broadhead in ‘Monika Brugger. Heimat. 1992-2008’ page 5, Arnoldsche Art Publishers, Stuttgart, 2009)\n\nMonika Brugger's brooches are designed to attach without a pin: a rubber ring fits tightly within the circular aperture on the back, gripping the layer of fabric between it and the brooch.\r\n\r\nThis brooch is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.","physicalDescription":"A gently-domed disc of silver, backed with a similar disc which has a large circular opening in the centre.
