For Gappmayr the placement of a particular sign on the page is an important element of our understanding of the meaning of the notion it signifies. In his work ZEIT (Time), Gappmayr breaks down the four individual signs or letters Z, E, I and T into their constituent elements or strokes and then makes individual strokes of each letter visible in different arrangements on successive page openings.
