Many survive on decorative objects, charting his life from cradle to grave. Some were made as one-offs commissions, others in materials that allowed easy reproduction. To underline Louis's sacred and secular power and his dynastic origins, the imagery often combines contemporary French and ancient Roman references. The French cockerel and fleur-de-lis appear often, as do the crown and the sun, which he took as his symbol. \r\n\r\nThe Medallic History of Louis XIV\r\n1702\r\n\r\nLouis XIV commissioned the great medallist Jean Warin to create a medallic history of the significant events of his reign as they unfolded. Forty years later this book was published as the culmination of the project. The frontispiece shows defeated Time acting as a lectern for Clio, muse of history. The king's portrait dominates the scene, supported by Mercury, the Roman messenger of the Gods.  \n\nFrance (Paris)\nBy Charles Simonneau the Elder after Antoine Coypel\r\n\nEngraving\nConserved with the support of the Friends of the V&A to commemorate  \nthe retirement of Sir Mark Jones\n\r\nNationa Art Library ","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["38041800159964"],"accessionNumberNum":"38041800159964","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"NAL Pressmark","id":"THES56809"},"number":"75.M.29"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN1210","2019LN8603","2019LN7657","2019LU3251","2019LV1635","2019LW8797","2019LW4840"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2014-05-19","availableToBook":false}}
