It is a particular type of benigirai-e that employs a predominantly purple colour and is known as a murasaki-e (or 'purple picture'). Benigirai-e were characterised by a more muted palette than nishiki-e (brocade prints). They were popular in the late Tenmei era (1781-9).\r\n\r\nUnusual among works showing a parading courtesan is the presence of a young man, apparently the courtesan's guest. This print follows the style of the artist's master, Eishi, so closely that if it were not for the signature, one might easily mistake it for the master's work. Nothing is known about Gokyô except that he signed all his works 'disciple of Eishi'.","physicalDescription":"Murasaki-e (purple picture); Bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women); one sheet of a triptych","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gokyô","id":"A18637"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"block printing","id":"AAT53289"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour print from wood blocks","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo (Japanese period)","id":"AAT106643"},{"text":"Ukiyo-e","id":"AAT106769"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2013GG4261","2006AG2386","2007BL9368"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES393958"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1785-1790","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"375","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"247","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Ôban size","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Eishi Monjin Gokyô ga'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Picture by Gokyô, a disciple of Eishi","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature."}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Wright and Stanford, accessioned in 1898.
