As the lace was not completed, the stages of its construction can be clearly seen. The parchment was marked out in ink with the shape and pattern required, then a thicker thread was laid down along the pattern’s outline, held in place by threads taken through to the reverse side of the parchment. The lace was gradually constructed stitch by stitch on this outline structure, with linking bars added to help hold it together. When the lace was complete, the threads at the back of the parchment would be cut, the finished piece lifted off, and the parchment was ready for reuse. The number of pinholes around the edges of this piece suggest it was reused several times.\r\n\r\nThe parchment was purchased by the Museum in 1854 for 30 shillings (£1.50). As an unfinished piece it would have been intended for teaching purposes.","physicalDescription":"Panel of parchment, in the shape of a waistcoat front, inked with a pattern and with a design of raised needle lace worked in linen thread, and is half completed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"linen","id":"x35336"}],"techniques":[{"text":"needle lace","id":"x29416"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Parchment with needle lace worked in linen thread and ink","categories":[{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2007BM0188","2007BL8166"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES307223"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Parchment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1680","earliest":"1675-01-01","latest":"1684-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"73.66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"33","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"29","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"measurements taken from register","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Waistcoat panel of parchment with needle lace worked in linen thread, probably made in Venice, ca. 1680","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"This type of needle lace is usually attributed to Venice, but was made in other European countries including Spain.
