She was befriended by Fred's sister, the actress Ellen Terry, who encouraged her interest in writing. When out of work in 1926, Steen took Dame Ellen's advice and wrote a novel. This was the start of a successful career, during which Steen wrote over forty books, mainly historical fiction, but also plays and biographies. In 1962 she published <i>A Pride of Terrys</i>, an account of the Terry family.","physicalDescription":"Lace cap, edged with Honiton lace.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Steen, Marguerite","id":"C4633"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lace","categories":[{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014HB3007"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES402721"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap","id":"AAT46094"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 20th century","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the British Theatre Museum Association","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"14/09/2023","earliest":"2023-09-14","latest":"2023-09-14"},"part":"front to back","note":"measured 3D as if worn"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"14/09/2023","earliest":"2023-09-14","latest":"2023-09-14"},"part":"","note":"measured 3D as if worn"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Approx.","date":{"text":"14/09/2023","earliest":"2023-09-14","latest":"2023-09-14"},"part":"Top to bottom","note":"Measured 3D as if worn"}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by conservation","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given to the British Theatre Museum Association by Marguerite Steen in October 1973.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lace cap, worn by Ellen Terry, from her personal wardrobe","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.1416-1984"],"accessionNumberNum":"1416","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":1984,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"BTMA accession number","id":"THES51752"},"number":"1973/A/118"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-27","recordCreationDate":"2014-05-01","availableToBook":false}}
