The cord provides a striking contrast to the main textile of the dress, a delicate silk gauze woven with horizontal tufts of coloured threads.\r\n\r\nThe dress is constructed with the typical high waist of the early nineteenth-century 'Empire line'. Fashions of Ancient Greece and Rome remained a strong influence into the first decades of the century, and white continued to be the most popular colour for evening wear. This dress would probably have been worn over a white silk slip - the silk underdress in the photograph is a replica.
