It is a simple toy, but one that has stood the test of time, going in and out of fashion throughout the ages.\r\n\r\nOriginally made in the late 19th century, these marbles were found on the banks of the River Thames by a professional 'Mudlark'. This set consists of 99 different coloured and sized marbles, all with internal swirls in different shades of colours such as green, red, blue, yellow and orange. ","physicalDescription":"These 99 marbles are all made from clear glass, although all of them have internal swirls in different shades of blue, green, red, yellow, orange and brown. Some of the clear glass has taken on colour of the internal swirl making them appear to be tinted glass of a certain colour. The surfaces are slighlty chipped, scratched, and generally worn, presumably from play. There is also evidence on ingrained dirt from their time in the Thames.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"Maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT53931"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glass","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"},{"text":"Toys & Games","id":"THES262248"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"},{"text":"Play","id":"THES274366"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2023NH7083"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA014","id":"THES390129"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES324717"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES324717"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES324717"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES324717"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"marbles","id":"AAT211125"}],[{"text":"marbles","id":"AAT211125"}],[{"text":"marbles","id":"AAT211125"}],[{"text":"marbles","id":"AAT211125"}],[{"text":"marbles","id":"AAT211125"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870-1900","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Graeme Brudenell","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"20/05/2014","earliest":"2014-05-20","latest":"2014-05-20"},"part":"Largest marble","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"20/05/2014","earliest":"2014-05-20","latest":"2014-05-20"},"part":"smallest marble","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"These marbles were found on the banks of the River Thames by a professional 'Mudlark'.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A set of 99 marbles in different colours and sizes such as green, yellow, white, blue, red, orange and brown, made in England in the late 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[{"text":"Thames","id":"x31213"}],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.341:1-2013","B.341:2-2013","B.341:3-2013","B.341:4-2013","B.341:5-2013"],"accessionNumberNum":"341","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2013,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-21","recordCreationDate":"2014-04-15","availableToBook":false}}
