The performer shown is probably David Whitworth Jones who performed with the Ballets Russes 1918-19 primarily in mime roles.\r\n\r\nSadko was described as a ‘fantastic ballet in one act’. Initially, in 1911, the Ballets Russes had presented scene 6 of Rimsky Korsakov’s opera with vocalists as well as dancers but to provide a novelty for the second Ballets Russes tour of North America Adolph Bolm choreographed a new ballet (without singers) re-using the set by Boris Anisfeld and with costumes by Natalia Goncharova. Sadko was previewed before the tour Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastián, Spain on 19 August 1916. It was first performed by the Ballets Russes in London on 31 October 1918 at the Coliseum Theatre and the production had its last ever performance there on 12 February 1919. For London M. Whitworth Jones took the role of the Sea-King while Jean Jazvinsky who had created the role, took over as Sadko.\t\r\n\r\nThe critic of the Observer 3 November 1918 described Sadko as 'a fascinating little ballet, at once comical and exquisite' and wrote that the merchant 'musician so charmed the Sea-king’s daughter that she drew him down under the waves…Once there he started playing his harp till the finny Court had to dance to it. How odd, how madly, how waterily they jigged! There was the great Sea-King himself, with his huge green beard and his splendid robes and crown bobbing it up and down and round and round.'\r\n\r\nAllinson’s drawing was an illustration for a booklet in Cyril Beaumont’s series Impressions of the Russian Ballet that was never produced.\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Illustration by Adrian Allinson showing the Sea-King in the ballet, Sadko, as performed by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes probably at the London Coliseum in 1918 He is standing on his right leg with his decorative gown flowing behind hi.m He has long hair and a long beard, wears an elaborate crown and caries a sceptre surmounted by a star.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Allinson, Adrian Paul ROI, RBA","id":"A5457"},"association":{"text":"illustrator","id":"x36173"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and black ink in paper","categories":[{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2015HL0405"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES352254"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Illustration","id":"x33379"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1918","earliest":"1913-01-01","latest":"1922-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Cyril W.
